SUMMARY:WEB 1216 Domestic Violence in Immigration Law

SUMMARY:FREE 1266 Vicarious Trauma in the Legal Profession (FREE Members Workshop)

If you are not already an ILPA member\, but would like to attend this training\, please contact the ILPA Secretariat about membership (info@ilpa.org.uk). \nLevel: All Levels  \nDescription: \nIn this webinar ‘Vicarious Trauma in the Legal Profession’\, Claiming Space co-directors\, Joanna Fleck and Rachel Francis\, will cover the following topics: \n•	Vicarious Trauma; \n•	Reflective practice; and\, \n•	Boundaries and burnout. \nThe training will include both theory and practice\, providing attendees with the language to discuss the impact of working with trauma and practical tools to reflect upon and manage that impact. \nAudience:  \nThis training is for ILPA Members only. This webinar is limited to a capacity of 20 people and will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis. No more than 5 people from the same organisation can attend the event.  \n\n\nTutors: \nJoanna Fleck is a reflective practice facilitator\, trainee psychotherapist\, and writer. She spent over 10 years working in legal aid\, specialising in actions against the state\, inquests and public inquiries. She has an MSc in Psychology with research on secondary traumatic stress in the legal profession. This research and ongoing study informs the work of Claiming Space. She is an experienced freelance trainer and group facilitator as well as a meditation and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy teacher. \nRachel Francis is a barrister practising in immigration and family law with particular expertise in working with vulnerable clients. She is the former co-chair of Young Legal Aid Lawyers. During her time as co-chair\, Rachel saw first-hand the effects of working with trauma in the legal profession. She was jointly responsible for the strategic direction of the group and for co-ordinating its campaigning\, promoting social mobility and protecting the interests of junior lawyers who believe in the importance of legal-aided work as a means of achieving social justice. In July 2019 Rachel was awarded the LAPG Special Award for outstanding commitment to access to justice.

It will include an opportunity to participate in case studies\, either in groups or led by the tutors. \nThe topics covered will include:  \n\nPreparing applications for leave outside the rules; \nSupporting evidence\, including instructing experts;\nFee waivers and application process. \n\nThe aim of this course is to develop an understanding of a best practice approach to applications for leave outside the rules . \nThe course will not cover: asylum\, humanitarian protection\, discretionary leave\, post-asylum\, fresh claims or family reunion \nAudience: \nThis course will be of particular interest to immigration law practitioners acting in personal immigration matters. \n\n\nTutors: Ashley Fleming\, Harper Macleod and Janey Armstrong\, Drummond Miller \nJaney is a partner at Drummond Miller LLP and leads the firm’s immigration team in Glasgow. DESCRIPTION:This course will better enable practitioners to advise clients on all aspects of naturalisation as a British citizen.\n\n\nLevel: Intermediate – Advanced \nDescription: \nThis course will enable practitioners to advise and assist foreign nationals on all aspects of securing naturalisation as a British citizen for adults\, as well as registration for their families/children. This course also includes all relevant up-dates made by the Nationality and Borders Act 2022. \nFollowing this course practitioners and advisors will be better placed to: \n\nAdvise and assist foreign nationals and their family members on the criteria for naturalisation as a British citizen and on associated applications for registration\nAdvise and assist on all aspects of applying for naturalisation as a British citizen\, including residence\, absences\, good character\, and future intentions and on associated applications for registration\n\nAudience: \nThis course is designed for practitioners who work in the field of Nationality law\, those experienced in other areas of immigration work and who already have some knowledge of Nationality law\, and those seeking a refresher/update course. \n\n\nTutors: Adrian Berry\, Garden Court Chambers and Ilda de Sousa\, Kingsley Napley LLP \nAdrian Berry is a barrister at Garden Court Chambers. Equally\, she has extensive experience in advising investors\, entrepreneurs and high-net worth individuals. \nPrior to joining Kingsley Napley LLP\, Ilda was the UK Country Manager for Emigra Europe Limited\, a specialist global immigration consultancy firm\, with service centres on three continents\, providing global immigration services for over 100 different countries. Ilda was responsible for the overall management of the UK office\, including advising large multinational clients in respect of their UK Immigration related matters. \nShe also worked as an Associate at ASG Immigration where she advised on all aspects of business and personal immigration\, with an emphasis on multinational employees\, skilled migrants and applications under European law. \nIlda has spoken on matters of immigration law for several distinguished organisations throughout her career. DESCRIPTION:This session is aimed at practitioners who would like a grounding in statelessness issues.\n\n\nLevel: Basic – Intermediate  \nDescription: \nThis session is aimed at practitioners who would like a grounding in statelessness issues\, including applying for leave to remain as a stateless person\, routes to acquisition of British citizenship for stateless persons\, and how to evidence  statelessness in the context of removal and unlawful detention. \nFollowing this course practitioners and advisors will be better placed to:  \n\nAdvise and assist foreign nationals to make applications for leave to remain as stateless persons\nAdvise and assist on all aspects of applying for registration as a British citizen\nAdvise and assist on how to evidence statelessness to the required standard in other contexts eg. nationality applications\, removal and detention\nAdvise and assist on legal remedies\n\nPlease note that this course will not cover presenting asylum claims.  \nThis course aims to help busy practitioner to identify where statelessness may be relevant; to advise clients on options and then to access a durable solution. \nAudience: Practitioners who work in the field of statelessness and nationality law\, those experienced in other areas of immigration work who already have some knowledge of statelessness and nationality law\, and those seeking a refresher/update course. \n\n\nTutors: Adrian Berry\, Garden Court Chambers and Judith Carter\, Liverpool Law Clinic \nAdrian Berry is a barrister at Garden Court Chambers and an ILPA Patron. As regards statelessness issues\, he acts and advises in relation to statelessness cases\, including in relation to the 1954 Convention Relating to the Status of Stateless Persons and the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness. He works on cases concerning stateless persons in detention\, the regularization of stateless persons\, and the welfare of stateless persons. He has worked with Asylum Aid and the Equal Rights Trust on statelessness issues. He is a member of the Advisory Council of the European Network on Statelessness (ENS). \nJudith Carter is a solicitor and academic who has worked on statelessness leave to remain applications since 2013\, and is the co-author of the ILPA/Uni of Liverpool Best Practice Guide. She maintains the UK Index on Statelessness for the European Network on Statelessness and has worked as an expert for the UNHCR and Council of Europe. She works at the University of Liverpool Law Clinic as a lecturer and solicitor.
