It also provides detailed analysis for those dealing with more complex cases of this type. \nAim of the course: The session aims to provide participants with a firm understanding of international and comparative approaches to this topic. \nType of Course: Overview/Practical \n\n\nTutor: Professor David Cantor\, University of London \nDavid is the founder and Director of the Refugee Law Initiative\, an international research centre at the University of London. He brings 25 years’ experience of research\, training and advocacy on refugee law. \nHis longstanding work on displacement in disaster contexts has been published in prestigious journals and in reports for governments and international organisations. It has also served as the basis for new regional and national legal and policy frameworks. \nHe has practical experience of asylum litigation in the UK\, as a Legal Officer for the Refugee Legal Centre; and established the Refugee Law Clinic at the University of London. He was previously seconded as a principal advisor to UNHCR at headquarters level.

If you are not already an ILPA member\, but would like to attend this training\, please contact the ILPA Secretariat about membership (info@ilpa.org.uk). \nLevel: All Levels \nDescription: \nIn this webinar ‘Vicarious Trauma in the Legal Profession’\, Claiming Space co-directors\, Joanna Fleck and Rachel Francis\, will cover the following topics: \n• Vicarious Trauma; \n• Reflective practice; and\, \n• Boundaries and burnout. \nThe training will include both theory and practice\, providing attendees with the language to discuss the impact of working with trauma and practical tools to reflect upon and manage that impact. \nAudience: \nThis training is for ILPA Members only. She spent over 10 years working in legal aid\, specialising in actions against the state\, inquests and public inquiries. She has an MSc in Psychology with research on secondary traumatic stress in the legal profession. This research and ongoing study informs the work of Claiming Space. She is an experienced freelance trainer and group facilitator as well as a meditation and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy teacher. \nRachel Francis is a barrister practising in immigration and family law with particular expertise in working with vulnerable clients. She is the former co-chair of Young Legal Aid Lawyers. During her time as co-chair\, Rachel saw first-hand the effects of working with trauma in the legal profession. She was jointly responsible for the strategic direction of the group and for co-ordinating its campaigning\, promoting social mobility and protecting the interests of junior lawyers who believe in the importance of legal-aided work as a means of achieving social justice. In July 2019 Rachel was awarded the LAPG Special Award for outstanding commitment to access to justice.

DESCRIPTION:Practitioners will receive an in-depth look at how to approach applications for leave outside the immigration rules\n\n\nLevel: Basic – Intermediate \nDescription: Practitioners will receive an in-depth look at how to approach applications for leave outside the rules\, including how to assess the applicant’s circumstances and available evidence\, as well as practical considerations for making applications. It will include an opportunity to participate in case studies\, either in groups or led by the tutors. \nThe topics covered will include: \n\nPreparing applications for leave outside the rules;\n\n\nSupporting evidence\, including instructing experts;\n\n\nFee waivers and application process.\n\nThe aim of this course is to develop an understanding of a best practice approach to applications for leave outside the rules. \nThe course will not cover: asylum\, humanitarian protection\, discretionary leave\, post-asylum\, fresh claims or family reunion. \nAudience: This course will be of particular interest to immigration law practitioners acting in personal immigration matters. \n\n\nTutors: Ashley Fleming\, Harper Macleod and Janey Armstrong\, Drummond Miller \nJaney is a partner at Drummond Miller LLP and leads the firm’s immigration team in Glasgow. As regards statelessness issues\, he acts and advises in relation to statelessness cases\, including in relation to the 1954 Convention Relating to the Status of Stateless Persons and the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness. He works on cases concerning stateless persons in detention\, the regularization of stateless persons\, and the welfare of stateless persons. He has worked with Asylum Aid and the Equal Rights Trust on statelessness issues. He is a co-author of Fransman’s British Nationality Law. \nJudith Carter  has worked on statelessness leave to remain applications since 2013. She is the co-author of the ILPA/Uni of Liverpool Best Practice Guide. She maintains the UK Index on Statelessness for the European Network on Statelessness and has worked as an expert for the UNHCR and Council of Europe. She works at the University of Liverpool Law Clinic as a lecturer and solicitor.
