ILPA Welcomes the New Government

ILPA documents

Following the result of the General Election on 4 July 2024, we welcome Sir Keir Starmer’s new Government and congratulate Yvette Cooper on her appointment as Home Secretary. We look forward to working with the Home Office, under her leadership, to ensure the UK has a fair and humane system of immigration and asylum.

We are delighted that the new Prime Minister has committed to scrap the Rwanda Asylum Plan which we have opposed since it was first announced. There is clearly much work to be done to fix the UK’s asylum system and we invite the Home Office to draw upon ILPA’s collective expertise and knowledge to help find workable, just solutions.

We are hopeful that a change in government will also bring a change in the damaging and divisive rhetoric that has overshadowed so much of the debate in recent years. We look forward to a more collaborative, positive culture, which focuses on our shared humanity and where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
