This course will better enable practitioners to advise clients on all aspects of naturalisation as a British citizen.

Level: Intermediate – Advanced

Description:

This course will enable practitioners to advise and assist foreign nationals on all aspects of securing naturalisation as a British citizen for adults, as well as registration for their families/children. This course also includes all relevant up-dates made by the Nationality and Borders Act 2022.

Following this course practitioners and advisors will be better placed to:

  1. Advise and assist foreign nationals and their family members on the criteria for naturalisation as a British citizen and on associated applications for registration
  2. Advise and assist on all aspects of applying for naturalisation as a British citizen, including residence, absences, good character, and future intentions and on associated applications for registration

Audience:

This course is designed for practitioners who work in the field of Nationality law, those experienced in other areas of immigration work and who already have some knowledge of Nationality law, and those seeking a refresher/update course.

Tutors: Adrian Berry, Garden Court Chambers and Ilda de Sousa, Kingsley Napley LLP

Adrian Berry is a barrister at Garden Court Chambers. He has an extensive practice in British nationality law, both in historic Commonwealth-based claims and in contemporary issues concerning the automatic acquisition of citizenship, naturalisation and registration, as well as deprivation and loss of British nationality.

He advises on claims to be a British citizen, British Overseas citizen (BOC), British overseas territories citizen (BOTC), British National (Overseas) (BN(O)), British subject (BS), or British Protected Person (BPP).

Adrian served as the Chair of the ILPA Committee of Trustees from 2014-2020 and was appointed as ILPA Patron in 2021.

Ilda de Sousa is a partner in the immigration team at Kingsley Napley. She is a South African qualified attorney and a British qualified solicitor who joined the firm in January 2010.

Ilda has more than ten years of UK corporate immigration law experience, managing large company clients as well as handling complex matters for individuals, British nationality applications, appeals, judicial reviews and applications under European Law including Brexit related advice.

Ilda also has extensive knowledge and experience in all aspects of the Points Based System, including assisting employers with their Skilled Worker or Temporary Work sponsor registrations and advising on immigration compliance issues. Equally, she has extensive experience in advising investors, entrepreneurs and high-net worth individuals.

Prior to joining Kingsley Napley LLP, Ilda was the UK Country Manager for Emigra Europe Limited, a specialist global immigration consultancy firm, with service centres on three continents, providing global immigration services for over 100 different countries. Ilda was responsible for the overall management of the UK office, including advising large multinational clients in respect of their UK Immigration related matters.

She also worked as an Associate at ASG Immigration where she advised on all aspects of business and personal immigration, with an emphasis on multinational employees, skilled migrants and applications under European law.

Ilda has spoken on matters of immigration law for several distinguished organisations throughout her career. She has also written several articles on a variety of subjects relating to UK Immigration law.

She is recommended as a Thought Leader in the 2022 International Who’s Who of Business Immigration Lawyers, Chambers and Partners, and is ranked as a Leading Individual in Legal 500 UK 2021. She has also been recognised in the Citywealth Leaders List 2020.
