Practitioners will receive an in-depth look at how to approach applications for leave outside the immigration rules

Level: Basic – Intermediate


Practitioners will receive an in-depth look at how to approach applications for leave outside the rules, including how to assess the applicant’s circumstances and available evidence, as well as practical considerations for making applications. It will include an opportunity to participate in case studies, either in groups or led by the tutors.

The topics covered will include:

  • Preparing applications for leave outside the rules;
  • Supporting evidence, including instructing experts;
  • Fee waivers and application process.

The aim of this course is to develop an understanding of a best practice approach to applications for leave outside the rules .

The course will not cover: asylum, humanitarian protection, discretionary leave, post-asylum, fresh claims or family reunion


This course will be of particular interest to immigration law practitioners acting in personal immigration matters.

Janey is a partner at Drummond Miller LLP and leads the firm’s immigration team in Glasgow. She advises on all aspects of immigration, nationality and asylum law and has over a decade of experience in the field.

Janey regularly provides external training on immigration law and has recently delivered seminars on the EU Settlement Scheme to immigration advisors, local authorities and third sector organisations. Janey is recommended for Immigration by both Chambers & Partners and the Legal 500.

Ashley a senior associate solicitor at Harper Macleod LLP and has over 15 years’ experience working in the field of immigration. Her caseload covers all aspects of immigration, asylum and nationality law.

Ashley is a regular trainer for ILPA and has delivered courses on the EU Settlement Scheme, introductory courses on both immigration and asylum law to MPs’ Caseworkers and Assistants and the Introduction to Immigration Law course for practitioners.
